Michael Gould - REBIRTHER

BREATHPOWER.

Have you ever stopped to think about your breath?  To relate it to the life you are living, to the life you want?  Have you ever stopped breathing?  Not for long, I guess.  Your life here starts with your first breath.  And it ends with your last.  Yes; BREATH is LIFE!

In the ancient Greek language, “Life” and “Spirit” were denoted by the same word.  At the end of earthly life, we seem to experience the departure of breath as the release of the spirit.  Just as at the beginning of a human life, the baby starts to use its lungs when the umbilical cord is cut, and  the first breath becomes the first step in independent living.  Our own English language links the breath with life and spirit in the word “inspire” and its derivatives.  And when we take leave of our body, we “expire”.

Breathing is such a natural phenomenon that we rarely think about it.  Like the gifts of sunshine or water, we tend to look upon it as our birthright.  We forget this miracle sustains us, as we become distracted by the dramas of life, our ambitions, our frustrations, our grievances, our fears, our loves.  And our breath unconsciously reacts.  It stops.  It catches. It comes in short pants or long sighs.  It yawns, it hisses, it sobs, and then it stops again.  At these times our connection to the life force within can become febrile and hesitant, as we focus on our role as a separate hero in our own dream, and forget altogether the stately power that dwells within.  As our breath becomes shallower, we lose energy, and the natural flow of energy within us, the “chi” or “life force” can become blocked and even stagnant.  Like a muddy puddle.

Have you stood by a rushing river, sparkling in the sun, and listened with your heart to the laughing, gurgling water?  Have you watched the playful eddies, the dancing ripples, and felt the power of resurgent life move all around you, and within?  Have you looked up the bank at the green willows, and maybe espied an otter, or caught the vivid flash of a kingfisher?  And have you felt your entire body resonate with the wholeness and the vivacity of that scene, of which you are an irreplaceable part?  Take a deep breath now, and make a decision.  How would you like your life to be?  Like a sparkling river, or a muddy puddle?

REBIRTHING is a gentle therapy, based upon the power of the breath to heal old wounds, to help us let go of hurt and grievance and open up to gifts of grace.  It can help to let go the blocks to Love and of limiting patterns of behaviour, learned very early in life as a perceived method of defence by a small child against, for example, critical parents, siblings, or teachers.  It can be specially helpful in the areas of self-esteem and confidence.
